The Mark 1 1993 Ford Mondeo speedometer cable replacement.

The cable is approximately 42 inches long, with a square male fitting at one end,and a nylon socket female fitting at the other.Refer to photograph 1.

Ordinarily the replacement of this cable should be a straightforward fob,but Ford,in their infinite wisdom, have modified the cable,so that there are now two parts.

The new cable comes in two pieces. The top part being the same as the original cable, only too short. This cable fits into a second cable, with a chrome socket at one end,and the square male socket and nut at the other end.

This cable is not compatible with the original cable fittings.

I modified the new cable, and fitted it,and it works just fine.

This is how to do it.

On the original cable, there is a nylon bush at one end that fits on the cable drive.

1. Cut this off the cable. 2. Remove the nylon bushing that holds the cable to the bulkhead speedometer fitting. 3. With a small diameter drift, punch out the cable from the nylon bush.A blunt ended nail will do just fine. 4. Using a small file, cut the bore of the nylon bush so a square shape, that will fit neatly on the end of the new cable with a neat fit. [A small toolmakers file,or jewellers file will do.} 5. Push this on the cable and put the nylon bushing over it.

This is now ready to be fitted on to the speedometer.

Drill out the hole in the original plastic bushing to about half an inch of so to enable it to fit over the new cable assembly. Then glus all around this plastic bush so that it is glued to the new cable assembly. Push this assembly on to the spigot of the speedometer, the square spigot protuding from the speedometer. Then push the outer nylon bushing over this so that the two lugs of the bushing fit on to the speedometer bush. There will be a gap of about 3/4 inch between the chrome fitting and the bulkhead of the car. Get a small clamp and fit it over the cable just behind the chrome bush,so that it is a tight fit between the chrome bush and the bulkhead of the car. A piece of wood with a slot cut in it or a jubilee clip will do just fine.

The other end of the cable fits into the shaft of the speed sensor that is on the bottom of the engine near the bulkhead.Screw this onto the speed sensor, and the job is complete.

Re-assemble the components,ie.,the grills under the wiper blades, screws and screw covers and screw the wiper blades back on the wiper screws and the job is complete.
