In order to keep legal, spot lights can only come on when main beam is activated. This guide works on that principle.

You can put your spot lights where ever you want as long as they point forward and do not obstruct the existing headlamps. I added HID spots to the fog light location on my MK1:

Hardware

1) 2x pairs of fog light plugs (if you use your existing fog lights)

2) 6-8m of cable (for lights)

3) White Ford relay and associated socket with a good couple of inches of cables

4) 30 Amp red cable (approx 3-5m depending how you route from battery)

5) 30 Amp fuse (green) and holder

6) Approx 4-5m of black cable to go from lights/switch/relay to ground

7) Approx 6-7m of different coloured cable to go from sockets/switch/relay

8) 1x 12Volt switch (with illumination if you want)

9) 2x crimp ends for switch (3 if switch is illuminated)

10) Loom Tape (non-sticky, else is problematic when it gets warm)

11) Liquid glue (to glue loom tape)

Tools

1) Soldering Iron

2) Solder

3) Heat shrink (preferably with adhesive, but not necessary)

3) Crocodile clips or something similar (makes soldering little easier when both wires are held in place)

4) Crimping tool/wire stripper

5) Cable ties

Steps

Either struggle and put the cabling in front of radiator following loom track or find alternative route.

Initially I went the struggle route, but about 2 months later I needed a new radiator, so redid the loom.

1) Cable fog light plugs onto new cables.

2) Solder positive and negative sides together respectively into 2 single cables.

3) Ground negative cable to ground point (behind lhs headlamp)

4) Run fog light feed and battery feed cables into cabin.

5) Run fog light feed cable to relay location (I positioned mine under the steering column as switch was located nearby in dash)

6) Solder fuse holder on to battery feed cable

7) Run battery feed from fuse holder to relay location

8) Splice into the cable which feeds the main beam. Mine was purple with a yellow stripe. I found it by using a 12v tester.

9) Run a cable from the main beam feed to the switch. You can put the switch where ever you want.

10) Run cables from switch and relay to ground

11) Test all cabling to confirm all is good.

This guide is identical for adding any switched items to your vehicle. EG: heated seats - make sure you use the correct rated fuse though.
