Door Pull Replacement - Mk3

Background

A common fault with the Mk3 is that the paint like coating on the door pulls begins to peel, making the whole interior look shabby. These parts are still available from Ford, albeit sometimes in slightly different shades. My car has a dark interior, and the original parts were a very dark blue. These are no longer available, but I have replaced them with black items, and it would be very difficult to tell the difference. They match the door panel perfectly.

For the black/dk blue interior, the front parts are;

1310374 - Drivers front (f&R power windows)

1310365 - Passengers front

I paid 12.57 for the passengers and 13.27 for the drivers, both + VAT. Bought them nearly a year apart, and from different dealers, which probably explains the price difference.

If you visit the dealer, they will most likely know what you are talking about.

When you are at the Ford dealer, also get a replacement screw cover for the wing mirror interior trim - they are very difficult to remove without damaging the trim - easiest way is to put a fine screwdriver or broadall through the cover, and disgard it, hence you need a new one.

Method

Remove mirror cover screw cover

Remove mirror cover screw

Remove mirror cover (pull it directly away from the door)

Remove screw cover behind door lever (this should be possible without damaging cover or trim)

Remove Torx screw

Remove lever surround

Carefully push forward the insert in the door pull - this requires some force, it is an L-shaped piece, held in by two tags in at the end of the bottom section, and a couple of press-tags in the long side of the L.

Remove the two philips screws revealed by removing this trim.

Remove the six philips screws around the edge of the trim panel - two on the front edge, two on the bottom, and two on the trailing edge.

Lift the trim upwards to unhook it from the top of the door, and while supporting the trim, disconnect the power window switch(es). The good news is that there is only one plug connecting all 4 switches on the drivers panel.

Unclip the switch / switch pack.

Place the trim on something soft and using wire cutters, clip off the old plastic tags, where the pegs have been melted down to hold the pull into place.

Remove the old pull trim, and fit the new one.

Ideally with someone else pressing the new trim in place, melt the pegs back down with a soldering iron. This is easiest if the pegs are pointing upwards, as the plastic will naturally press against the panel, rather than away from it.

As an alternative to melting down the tags, you can use 6 x Ford washer Finis 1070104, and a dab of glue to hold the replacement piece in place.

According to TSB 55/2002 the replacement door pulls are made of an alternative material, that should be more resistant to solvent attack. Replace switch (pack).

Refitting is a reverse of removal.

Should you also wish to replace the door pull insert, the part number for the black one is 1213539 - I paid £3.08 inc. VAT for mine. These are the same for all four doors.
