I had always dismissed Ford's as commonplace until a friend gave me a lift home in their Escort and I thought, "well, this is nice". The next week my 306 blew up and I found myself an Escort 1.6 Finesse which made it through a year before it's head gasket gave way spelling the end to it's life. This was followed by a 2.5 V6 Mk 2 Ghia X estate which was my love for 18 months - being treated to the finest oils, the most frequent servicing, and all the love it is respectable for a man to show his car in public. Alas, the V6 had to go last week as I have begun a relationship with a rather wonderful lady who lives some distance from me and the twice weekly tank fills were costing me a fortune so I have managed to find a two owner 2002 (52) Mondeo Ghia X 115bhp TDCi. Our relationship so far had yet to exceed 400 miles of driving in which time it's broken down (cam sensor) and develped an intermittent misfire (mechanics tell me turbo or injector but I suspect fuel rail pressure sensor or mucky fuel in the past (Shell Optimax / VPower from now on!)). Previous Fords from earlier life include a 1995 Mk1 Mondeo LX saloon (cracking car - crap electronics!), a 1988 Escort 1.6 LX (my first car with more than a 1.3 engine so I loved that one!), a 2004 Fiesta 1.4 Zetec Climate (from new!! (Before the divorce...)) and a Cortina 1.3 - 2 door! Yep - a long throw engine, and a two door saloon - in burnt orange... can't believe I let that one slip through my fingers!!
